Spencer Peterman sees value in what others discard. Based in Western Massachusetts, Peterman and his team craft wooden bowls and boards from fallen trees, often diseased or decomposing, that would otherwise be chipped or burned. With a background in basket weaving, Spencer transitioned into woodturning, designing his own lathe to create rugged, organic shapes that highlight the grain and history of each tree.
Together with his wife Michele, who brings a ceramicist’s eye to the process, they’ve built a business rooted in artistry, sustainability and local community. Wood is sourced from nearby tree services, then air-dried, turned, sanded and finished by hand using natural oils, waxes and milk paint. Each piece is unique, shaped by the tree’s age, texture and imperfections.
From moss-covered logs to gallery-worthy bowls, Spencer Peterman’s work is a testament to thoughtful reuse and craftsmanship that celebrates nature’s beauty in every curve and contour.
