The primary mode of human exposure stems from consuming food or beverages stored in (mostly plastic) containers containing these chemicals.
Reducing the Impact
Thankfully, the modern consumer yields more power than ever, and there are several things you can do to reduce exposure to bisphenols and phthalates while also supporting a market shift toward safer and more sustainable alternatives.
- Choose alternative materials: Opt for glass, porcelain or stainless steel containers and tableware, especially when dealing with hot food or liquids. These materials are less likely to contain bisphenols or phthalates.
- Avoid microwaving plastics: Refrain from microwaving food in plastic containers, as heat can lead to the release of bisphenols and phthalates into the food.
- Check recycling codes: Avoid plastic products marked with recycle codes 3 or 7, as these may be made with bisphenols or phthalates.
- Prioritize fresh food: Include more fresh foods in your diet and reduce consumption of canned, packaged and fast food to avoid chemicals found in food packaging.
- Choose fragrance-free personal care products: Look for personal care products labelled as fragrance-free, as the terms ‘fragrance’, ‘perfume’ or ‘parfum’ may indicate the presence of phthalates.
- Read product labels: Be vigilant about reading product labels for information on bisphenols and phthalates. Choosing products with clear labeling and ingredient transparency allows for informed consumer choices.
- Support sustainable brands: Opt for brands that support sustainability and use safer alternatives. Companies that prioritize environmental and health considerations contribute to reducing the overall presence of these chemicals in consumer goods.
Regulatory Initiatives
In the United States, federal action on bisphenols and phthalates has been limited but there are some key policy measures in place. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008 sets limits on phthalates in children's products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates materials in food packaging, banning BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oversees the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), which has been reformed to enhance chemical safety, allowing the EPA to regulate bisphenols and phthalates. Additionally, some states, such as California, Washington and Vermont, have implemented stricter regulations to address these chemicals in consumer products.
