Start Here: Air Quality

The materials and products we live with can quietly shape the air around us. Make three small changes that can have a lasting impact on your wellbeing.

Air Quality Start Here Wellness

We spend up to 90 percent of our time indoors, yet the air in our homes can be two to five times more polluted than the air outside. From synthetic furnishings to household cleaners, many everyday items release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), microplastics and other airborne pollutants that can compromise our wellbeing.

Indoor air quality doesn’t just influence how we feel day to day – it affects our sleep, our respiratory health, our immune systems and even our mood and cognitive performance. And yet, because these pollutants are invisible, we often overlook them. Creating a healthier home isn’t about a dramatic overhaul or perfection – making small, thoughtful changes can support our health over time. If we start with the air we breathe, we lay the foundation for every other room, habit and decision to follow.

Here are three small, powerful steps to improve your indoor air quality without renovating your home.

1. Switch to No- or Low-VOC Materials

Many conventional paints, sealants and furniture finishes off-gas VOCs into the air over time. These chemicals can irritate eyes, lungs and skin, and have been linked to long-term health concerns. When renovating or redecorating, opt for low- or zero-VOC (such as mineral) paints, natural wood finishes and untreated or oiled furniture instead of synthetic veneers. Look for certifications like Greenguard Gold or EU Ecolabel when choosing products.

2. Avoid Synthetic Fragrances

From candles to detergents, artificial scents are among the most common sources of indoor air pollution. Many contain phthalates and other endocrine disruptors that linger in the air and settle into household dust. Swap out synthetic air fresheners, plug-ins and perfumed cleaning products for essential oil-based or fragrance-free alternatives. If you enjoy a scented home, try simmering citrus peels, cinnamon sticks or herbs on the stove for a natural lift.

3. Ventilate Strategically and Clean Mindfully

Cross-ventilation is key, especially when cooking, cleaning, or painting. Open windows on opposite sides of your space to create airflow, or invest in a HEPA filter air purifier if natural ventilation isn’t possible. When dusting or vacuuming, use a damp cloth and a vacuum with a HEPA filter to capture particles without redistributing them into the air.

At WLLW, we believe the way your home smells, feels, and flows should support the way you live. Healthier air doesn’t require a perfect home or expensive tech – it starts with intention and small, consistent choices. By clearing the air, you make space for deeper rest, better focus and more clarity. Because when you can breathe better, everything else begins to feel lighter too.
